Why men choose laser hair removal
For most men it comes down to time and comfort. Shaving a back you can’t reach, trimming a chest every few days or redrawing a beard line every morning adds up. Laser hair removal targets the hair follicle, so it can reduce how much hair grows back over a series of sessions. Shaving, trimming and waxing only remove hair for a short time.
It is not all or nothing. You choose the areas, and you can treat part of an area, such as the neckline below a beard, while leaving the rest as it is.
Where most men start
There is no single right first area, but a few come up again and again.
“For the back, our Full Back Plus package covers the full back, shoulders and back of the neck,” says Foroozan Saneie, one of our laser hair removal practitioners.
Back and shoulders. These are the areas men find hardest to manage on their own, which is why they are often treated together.
Beard line and neck. Many men keep their beard and treat only the cheek line or the neck for a cleaner edge without shaving every day. Your practitioner maps the area with you before treatment, so only the areas you choose are treated.
Chest and abdomen. A common choice for men who trim regularly or want less upkeep.
Smaller areas. Ears, nose (outer and top only), unibrow and sideburns are listed treatment areas. Your practitioner confirms coverage at your consultation.
If you are unsure where to start, discuss the areas you want to treat with your practitioner, who confirms coverage at your consultation.
How the treatment works
At 4D we use the Elite iQ laser system by Cynosure, licensed by Health Canada (medical device licence 105883). It includes Skintel technology, which measures the melanin in your skin to support your practitioner’s choice of settings. During treatment, the skin is cooled with a Zimmer Cryo 6 air-cooling system to support comfort.
Laser hair removal works on hair in its active growth phase. Because hair grows in cycles, treatment is done as a series of sessions spaced several weeks apart. Coarse, dense hair on the back and chest often needs more sessions than finer hair, and hormonal areas such as the face can need occasional touch-ups. Results vary from person to person, and complete hair removal is not guaranteed. Your practitioner will recommend a schedule that suits your skin and hair.
“The question men ask me most is how many sessions they will need,” says Foroozan. “It depends on the area and the hair, so we plan it together at the consultation. What matters most is keeping to the recommended gap between sessions and finishing the series without adding extra time between visits.”
Laser hair removal works best when there is contrast between hair and skin. Very light, grey or red hair may not respond well. Your consultation confirms whether treatment is suitable for you.
What a first visit looks like
Every plan starts with a complimentary consultation. Your practitioner asks about your goals and the areas you want to treat, reviews your medical history and recent sun exposure, and assesses your skin and hair. You get your plan and price before you book, and there is no obligation.
Before each session:
- Shave the treatment area 12 to 24 hours before your appointment.
- Avoid waxing, plucking and tanning in the weeks before treatment.
- Come with clean skin, free of lotions.
Back hair is hard to reach, so if an area needs shaving at your appointment, a $20 in-clinic grooming fee applies. Treatments at 4D are done by our laser hair removal practitioners, Foroozan Saneie and Maryam Zeidabadi.
What it costs
Prices depend on the area, its size and the hair density. Larger areas and denser hair need more treatment time, so many men’s areas are priced under Extended Coverage. For example, a full back is $490 for a single visit, or $343 per visit with a 6-visit package. The Full Back Plus package (full back, shoulders and back of neck) is $1,264 for 3 visits. All prices are in CAD, plus GST.
You can see every area and package on our Men’s Laser Hair Removal page, and general information and Classic Coverage prices on our Laser Hair Removal page. If you would like to spread the cost, see our financing options.
Planning around your year
Because treatment is a series of sessions spaced several weeks apart, it helps to start well before you want to see the difference. Many men start in the cooler months, when it is easier to keep treated areas out of the sun between sessions. Your practitioner will explain how to protect treated skin and when to avoid sun exposure and tanning. For more on timing, see why winter is a good time for laser treatments.
A few honest answers
Does it hurt? Sensations vary, and many people describe a quick snapping or warm feeling. We cool the skin with a Zimmer Cryo 6 air-cooling system during treatment to support comfort, and your practitioner checks in with you throughout.
Will I be red afterwards? Mild redness or bumps are common and usually settle within hours to a couple of days.
Can I book several areas at once? Yes. Your practitioner can plan several areas in one appointment.
