Acne Scars Treatment North Vancouver
Acne scars can leave lasting texture changes, unevenness, and visible marks that remain long after active breakouts have cleared. They may appear as depressions in the skin, rough patches, discoloration, or areas where the skin no longer looks as smooth and even as it once did. At 4D Skin Care Clinic in North Vancouver, we offer personalized treatments to help improve the appearance of acne scars and support clearer, smoother, healthier-looking skin.
What Are Acne Scars?
Acne scars are the marks or texture changes left behind after acne has healed. Some scars appear as indentations or uneven areas in the skin, while others show up as lingering dark or red marks that affect the overall clarity of the complexion.
Not every breakout causes scarring, but when deeper inflammation affects the skin’s support structure, healing may leave visible changes behind. Acne scars can vary in depth, texture, and colour, which is why treatment should always be tailored to the type of scarring present.
Why Do Acne Scars Happen?
Acne scars happen when inflammation from a breakout affects the deeper layers of the skin. As the skin heals, collagen can be lost or rebuilt unevenly, leading to texture irregularities or lasting marks.
Common contributing factors include:
- Moderate to severe inflammatory acne
- Picking or squeezing breakouts
- Delayed acne treatment
- Deeper cystic blemishes
- Uneven collagen repair during healing
- Genetics and skin healing patterns
Because acne scars can be both textural and pigmented, treatment is often most effective when it is matched to your skin type, scar type, and overall goals.
Types of Acne Scars
Ice pick scars are narrow and deep. Boxcar scars are broader depressions with defined edges. Rolling scars are broad, sloping depressions, sometimes tethered to the tissue underneath. Hypertrophic scars are raised but stay within the original wound; keloid scars can extend beyond it. Flat red or brown marks left after acne are colour changes rather than texture scars, can last for months, and are assessed differently. At a consultation, we review the appearance of your skin and discuss whether a medical assessment is appropriate.
Treatments Available at 4D Skin Care Clinic
At 4D Skin Care Clinic, treatment for acne scars is personalized based on the type of scarring, the condition of your skin, and the level of improvement you want to achieve. Recommended options may include:
RF Microneedling
RF microneedling helps stimulate collagen production beneath the surface of the skin to improve texture, soften depressed scars, and support smoother-looking skin over time.
Traditional microneedling with the Dr. Pen A20 uses fine needles alone and may help improve the appearance of acne scars; learn more about microneedling at 4D.
Skin Resurfacing
Skin resurfacing helps refine the surface of the skin, improve uneven texture, and reduce the appearance of acne-related marks and irregularities.
Carbon Laser Facial
Carbon Laser Facial may be recommended when acne scars are accompanied by oily skin, congestion, enlarged pores, or uneven texture.
Hollywood Laser Peel
Hollywood Laser Peel can help improve skin clarity, refine texture, and support a brighter, smoother-looking complexion as part of a broader acne-scar treatment plan.
A consultation will help determine which treatment, or combination of treatments, is best suited to your skin, your goals, and your comfort.
Acne Scar Options We May Discuss
Which option may suit you depends on your scar type, skin tone and history. Results vary.
- Rolling and shallow boxcar scars: RF microneedling or skin resurfacing may be discussed after assessment, where suitable.
- Surface texture: microneedling may be discussed after assessment, where suitable.
- Fractional laser (Hollywood Spectra MDF): we can discuss whether this option is suitable for your concerns after assessing your skin and treatment goals.
- Flat red or brown marks: treatment depends on the cause and skin type; a clinician can discuss whether an appropriate light or laser option is suitable (IPL photofacial).
- Deep ice pick, tethered or raised scars: these need a separate specialist assessment and may call for procedures 4D does not offer.
CO2 Laser, BBL, Subcision, PRP and Fillers for Acne Scars
Fractional CO2 is an ablative laser resurfacing option offered by some providers. Recovery and risks depend on settings, skin and treatment. 4D does not offer CO2 laser. 4D offers Venus Viva-based resurfacing and fractional laser with the Hollywood Spectra Multi-Depth Focus (MDF) handpiece where suitable after assessment. Hollywood Spectra is licensed by Health Canada as a Class III medical device, licence 107809. The Hollywood Spectra Laser System is cleared by the US FDA under 510(k) K213569 for specified indications.
BBL is a branded broadband light technology. 4D does not offer BBL; it offers IPL photofacials using Venus Versa. Both use filtered broad-spectrum light, but devices, settings and indications differ, and suitability for redness or pigmentation requires assessment.
Subcision is a procedure some qualified clinicians use to release tethering beneath selected depressed scars. PRP uses a patient’s own processed blood and may be combined with other procedures by some providers. 4D does not offer subcision or PRP. Some clinicians use dermal fillers for selected depressed scars; 4D offers facial dermal fillers, but whether filler is suitable for acne scars is discussed at consultation.
Acne Scar Treatment FAQ
How many sessions do acne scars need?
The number varies with the scar type, your skin and the treatment. We discuss a plan after assessment; no fixed number suits everyone.
Can acne scars be removed completely?
Treatment may improve appearance, but complete removal is not guaranteed and results vary.
Is RF microneedling or microneedling better for acne scars?
Neither is best for everyone. We discuss your skin, scar type, risks and the options available at 4D.
Does CO2 laser work better than microneedling?
They use different technologies and recovery can differ. A qualified clinician can discuss which may suit your scars. 4D does not offer CO2 laser. We offer fractional laser with the Hollywood Spectra MDF handpiece where suitable after assessment.
What is the difference between BBL and IPL for acne marks?
BBL is a brand of broadband light; 4D offers Venus Versa IPL, not BBL. The devices and treatment settings differ.
How long is the downtime?
Recovery varies by treatment, settings and your skin. This includes fractional laser and microneedling. We explain expected effects and aftercare before treatment.
Can I treat active acne and scars together?
Active acne and scars need individual assessment. Scar procedures are often planned after active acne is controlled; seek medical assessment when needed.
How much does acne scar treatment cost in North Vancouver?
The cost depends on the treatment and plan. A non-injectable consultation at 4D is complimentary, and we discuss the cost before treatment.
Who performs the treatments?
A 4D practitioner discusses the treatment plan and who will perform your selected service before booking.
Can acne scars be treated on darker skin tones?
We assess skin tone, pigmentation history and treatment suitability individually. Some procedures can cause pigment changes, so we discuss benefits and risks before proceeding.
Do you offer fractional laser for acne scars?
4D offers fractional laser with the Hollywood Spectra MDF handpiece where suitable after assessment. We can discuss your scars, other concerns and treatment options at your consultation.
