Microneedling North Vancouver

Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, is a treatment that uses very fine needles to create tiny, controlled channels in the skin. These channels prompt the skin’s natural repair process, which supports collagen and gradual skin renewal. At 4D Skin Care Clinic in Edgemont Village, North Vancouver, we offer professional microneedling with the Dr. Pen A20, which is listed in Health Canada’s Medical Devices Active Licence Listing under licence 114618 (Class II).

Many people choose microneedling as a first step into skin renewal treatments. It may help improve the appearance of acne scars, enlarged pores and uneven texture, with a plan built around your skin. Book a complimentary consultation to find out whether it suits you.

What Is Microneedling (Collagen Induction Therapy)?

Microneedling is a non-surgical skin treatment performed with a professional microneedling pen. The pen moves a cartridge of fine, sterile needles up and down very quickly, creating thousands of tiny channels in the top layers of the skin. The skin responds by starting its normal healing process, and over the following weeks this process supports new collagen.

Professional microneedling is different from home rollers and home pens. In a 2021 advisory, Health Canada stated that it had not authorized any microneedling device for home use and that authorized devices were for professional use only. At 4D, every treatment starts with a skin assessment and uses a new, single-use cartridge.

How Microneedling Works

Before treatment, your practitioner cleanses the skin and may apply a numbing cream. The needle depth is then set for the area being treated, since skin on the forehead, cheeks and neck differs in thickness. The pen is moved across the skin in small sections.

The tiny channels close within hours. Over the next weeks, the skin's repair response continues beneath the surface, which is why changes from microneedling build gradually rather than appearing right away.

Your practitioner will tell you at consultation whether microneedling is a good match for your concern, or whether another treatment may suit you better.

The Device We Use: Dr. Pen A20

At 4D Skin Care Clinic, traditional microneedling is performed with the Dr. Pen A20. The Dr. Pen A20 is listed in Health Canada's Medical Devices Active Licence Listing under licence 114618 (Class II). Each treatment uses a new, single-use cartridge.

You can check any microneedling device yourself in Health Canada's Medical Devices Active Licence Listing (MDALL) before you book anywhere.

Comparing Microneedling Pens: Dr. Pen, SkinPen, Dermapen and Kaloya

People comparing microneedling often ask about pen brands such as Dr. Pen, SkinPen, Dermapen and Kaloya.

4D uses the Dr. Pen A20 and does not offer SkinPen, Dermapen or Kaloya treatments. In our view, the brand matters less than using a licensed device, a new sterile cartridge, the right settings for your skin and a practitioner who assesses you first. Results vary from person to person with any device.

Microneedling vs RF Microneedling

Traditional microneedling uses fine needles alone. RF microneedling combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy delivered beneath the surface; at 4D, RF microneedling is performed with Venus Viva, a separate, higher-intensity treatment.

Traditional microneedling is often a good starting point and is priced lower. RF microneedling may be recommended for deeper scarring or texture concerns. At your consultation, we explain which option fits your skin, budget and downtime.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Microneedling?

Microneedling may suit adults who want to improve acne scarring, pores or uneven texture without surgery. It is not right for everyone. In its 2021 microneedling advisory, Health Canada listed people who face extra risks, including people with bleeding or clotting disorders, a weakened immune system, uncontrolled diabetes, active skin infections, a history of keloid scars, people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, people taking blood thinners and people undergoing certain cancer treatments.

At consultation, we review your health history, medications, skin sensitivity, recent sun exposure and any active skin concerns before deciding together whether microneedling is appropriate.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

Your first visit starts with a skin assessment and a conversation about your goals. If microneedling is appropriate, a typical appointment includes cleansing, optional numbing time and the treatment itself. Most clients describe the sensation as light scratching or vibration, and numbing helps keep it comfortable. Your practitioner explains each step and checks in with you throughout.

Aftercare and Downtime

Redness similar to a mild sunburn is common for a day or two after microneedling, and some people notice dryness or light flaking afterwards. You will receive written aftercare instructions, which typically include:

  • Protecting your skin from the sun and using a broad-spectrum sunscreen.
  • Using gentle skincare and avoiding active products until your practitioner advises.
  • Avoiding makeup, heavy exercise and saunas for the period we recommend.
  • Contacting the clinic if you notice anything unexpected.

How Many Microneedling Sessions Will I Need?

Microneedling is usually done as a series. An initial course is usually 3 to 6 sessions, spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart, followed by maintenance if you wish. Your practitioner suggests a plan based on your skin, your concern and how your skin responds.
